Summer of Fun!
2024 Summer Camp Highlights: It’s been a summer filled with playing, exploring, and lots of fun and laughter for the kids in the CGC summer camps! Throughout July and August, campers participated in theme inspired activities, but their schedule also included a dip in the pools, water slides and inflatable course, outdoor playground time and special guest visits.
CGC summer staff shared their love of sport and their knowledge with the campers. Zeke introduced campers to basketball skills and one-on-one drills; Ainslie led Track & Field sessions with relay races, sprinting and a chance to try the long jump pit; Ethan taught campers volleyball techniques and Kiera coached soccer through a series of fun and engaging exercises. CGC Exercise Specialists Dylan, Sarah and Grant led fun fitness-style sessions showcasing movement skills and proper technique form, while incorporating our camp themes. The kids enjoyed all these different sport and fitness sessions!
The Spectacular Science Camps welcomed Mad Science of the Maritimes with enthusiasm and had the opportunity to participate in various experiments and scientific activities. Let’s Get Chemical touched on the basics of chemistry and the difference between chemical and physical reactions while partaking in various group experiments. Up, Up, and Away shared the principles of air and pressure with fun experiments using giant beach balls, vortex generators, and even toilet plungers! Lastly, in Solid, Liquid and Gas the campers had the opportunity to learn about the three states of matter and have fun with various dry ice experiments!
The Discovery Centre brought science to the CGC with their Portable Digital Planetarium. Inside the planetarium showcased a diverse perspective of the solar system and allowed kids to explore different planets.
The Back to the Sea Society captured the attention of all campers with their interactive touch tank. The kids had the opportunity to learn about many different sea animals, and even had the opportunity to touch and hold them! These animals included urchins, starfish, crabs, hermit crabs and more. Back to the Sea Society brought in squid to be dissected with the campers, which were later fed to their crabs.
Thank you to our other special guests–the YWCA (Youth Leadership), Clean Foundation, Nature Nova Scotia, Rugby Nova Scotia and CGC Communications Assistant Chad who hosted Olympic Trivia!
While these were a few of the top hits of summer camp, campers also had the opportunity to participate in these activities:
- Daily swims in the Leisure and Competition Pools , Water Slides and inflatable obstacle course
- Water balloons, spray toys, and the outdoor slip and slide
- Lots of awesome experiments such as Coca-Cola and Mentos explosion, borax crystal shells, Alka Seltzer Lava Lamps, and, of course, Slime!
- Tie dye, make their own sketchbooks, experiment with oil pastels and lots of paint, as well as test their skills in origami!
- Superhero shields
- Cheering for Canada and doing Olympic themed crafts and activities
With many camp choices, themes, activities and special guests, it’s been a summer to remember. Thanks for a fun summer—we can’t wait to do it all again next year!
