***Weather Notice – Hurricane Fiona***

Sept 28th Update: CGC reopening Sept. 29th @ 4pm

September 22, 2022

UPDATE #5 (Sept. 28th, 6pm – sorry for the delay!):

Thank you for your patience and kindness over the past few days! Here is the latest update at the CGC:

  • The CGC will continue to be an EMO evacuation shelter tonight into Thursday, September 29th.
  • The CGC will reopen for regular activities on Thursday, September 29th at 4pm, except for the Hot Tub and Water Slides (*see note below).

A very big THANK YOU to the Canadian Red Cross, The Salvation Army, the Disaster Animal Response Team of Nova Scotia, and the many volunteers that helped set up shelter at the CGC for individuals, families, and pets that were displaced by Hurricane Fiona. The CGC is proud to support the community in a variety of ways.

*Unfortunately, part of the CGC roof over the Aquatics Centre was damaged during the hurricane. The area has undergone a preliminary safety assessment and steps are being made to secure it from any further damage. Out of an abundance of caution, the surrounding outdoor area at ground level will be blocked off and some of the Aquatics Centre amenities will stay closed (i.e., Hot Tub and Water Slides). The timeline for repairs has yet to be determined, but an update will be provided as soon as one becomes available.

    Yours in healthy active living,
    Canada Games Centre

Here’s what’s happening at the CGC as Hurricane Fiona makes its way to NS:

    • Friday, September 23rd – the CGC will close at 7pm
      • All programs and scheduled activities before 7pm will go ahead as planned.
    • Saturday, September 24th – the CGC will be closed for the day.
      • The CGC will reopen Sunday. Should we need to delay opening on Sunday, we will provide an update at 5pm Saturday evening. Further CGC updates will also be posted to our social media feeds.

    EMO Evacuation Shelter:

    • As of 8pm on Friday, September 23rd, 2022 the CGC will become an evacuation shelter operated by the Canadian Red Cross, under the direction of the provincial Department of Community Services.
    • An evacuation shelter is a location where evacuees are received, documented, personal needs identified and overnight shelter provided.
    • Regular CGC activities and amenities are not available while the facility is operating as an evacuation shelter.
    • An evacuation shelter is different from a comfort centre.
      • A comfort centre is a place where community members who are remaining in their homes but do not have full services such as electricity, heat, and water, can gather for a short period of time during the day. Comfort centres are typically run by volunteers and provide water, warmth, and information.
      • Please note, the CGC is not a comfort centre at this time.
    • For questions regarding the evacuation shelter, please call 311.

      Stay dry and safe!
