A new year symbolizes a fresh start, fostering a healthy and active lifestyle. The process of setting goals seems simple but accomplishing them may come as a harder challenge. Our Fitness Team has worked together to come up with some tips on how to accomplish New Year’s resolutions and goals.
Tip 1: Move With Joy, Not Guilt
Mindfulness goes a long way when setting fitness goals. A change in mindset is helpful- rather than thinking “I have to work out”, think, “I am grateful I get to work out”. Choosing to move in enjoyable ways will help create an active lifestyle and assist in accomplishing wellness goals.
Tip 2: Consistency Is Greater Than Perfection
Focusing on how often movement is occurring rather than how long each session is, can be more effective. Shorter workouts a few times a week, rather than one long workout per week, will help build results in a healthy way.
Tip 3: Scheduling
Make the time and use a calendar to schedule workouts. Having an organized schedule can increase the amount of success received from a solid workout routine, turning goals into habits. For the best results, block out 30 to 60 minutes, three to four times a week to move in an active way.
Tip 4: Five Minute Rule
Sometimes, starting is the hardest part. Set an expectation of moving in an active way for five minutes. Once the workout has started, momentum kicks in turning five minutes into more, which quickly turns into a habit of working out regularly.
Tip 5: Switch Up Activities
Switching up activities is important. The muscles can get used to the same workouts which can slow down desired results. To combat this, try new activities! Try a new fitness class, a new weight machine, or new walking / running paths to challenge different muscles.
Tip 6: Rest And Reset
In order to build muscle, increase strength, or stick to a healthy active routine; rest is key. Listening to the body and learning to slow down is all part of the process in reaching fitness goals – individuals should prioritize rest days and quiet time within a healthy routine.
