Getting to know CSCA Athlete Ben Brown

October 27, 2016

With a goal of being part of Team Canada for the 2020 Paralympics in Toyko, 28-year old Ben Brown is one of the talented and dedicated athletes who train at the CGC and Canadian Sport Centre Atlantic (CSCA). He currently holds 11 Nova Scotia Track & Field provincial records in wheelchair racing, is a national champion in the T53 100m, and has won multiple national medals in 100m, 200m, and 400m distances.

“I love the access to a high performance training environment, available all year round when I’m at home,” remarks Ben about training at the CGC. The convenience of having CSCA and a large indoor track in the same building helps Ben focus more on his training and less on travel, especially when the snow starts falling. And focused is definitely one of the words that comes to mind when watching him train. As he powers his way up to high speeds and comes flying around the corners of the CGC Track, it’s mesmerizing and incredible to witness – but best done off to the side and out of his way!

“I want to be one of the best wheelchair racers in the world, a world Champion, Paralympic champion and a world record holder someday.”

In his spare time, Ben is Assistant Coach for the Central Kings Rural high school football team and a volunteer with Greenwood Wildcats JR A hockey team. His commitment to quality training and his overall determination is not only a great inspiration to young athletes, but has also enabled Ben to accomplish and set goals like going to the World Championships in London, England and Own the Podium at the Canada Games in 2017. “I want to be one of the best wheelchair racers in the world, a world Champion, Paralympic champion and a world record holder someday,” says Ben passionately.

On October 26th, Ben left for Japan to compete in his first marathon at the Oita International Wheelchair Marathon. His race will be streamed on Saturday, October 29th, 2016 at 10pm (local time) through the Oita International Wheelchair Marathon website. You can also follow his results and training year round on Twitter @BenBrown191.

Congratulations Ben on your many accomplishments to date, and we wish you the best of luck in Japan!
