POSITION SUMMARY:
Under the direction of both the Aquatics Operations and Aquatics Program Coordinators, this leadership role involves ensuring the efficient operation of the Canada Games Centre aquatic programs and evening pool operations. This position has two very distinct areas of responsibilities – one is assisting the Aquatics Program Coordinator with overseeing the swim instructor staff, ensuring all safety and teaching guidelines are followed, conducting regular evaluations of the swim instructor staff, and assisting with the overall operation of the Swim for Life program, and two is assisting the Aquatics Operations Coordinator with overseeing nightly deck operations, coordinating the lifeguards and slide attendants, planning and assisting with emergency response training, and regular evaluation of lifeguards and slide attendants.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
Administration:
- Assist in the compilation of year-end program reports
- Strong administrative and organizational skills
- Process and track program registration
- Evaluate lifeguards/instructors regularly and provide constructive feedback
- Create and update Aquatics staff resources
- Assist with the scheduling of staff and programs
- Assist with arranging facility bookings for schools and public rentals, schedule staff accordingly and complete all applicable paper work
Delivery of Aquatic Centre Programs:
- Ensure that a high standard of quality programs are delivered
- Actively attends lesson sessions to supervise and answer participant questions through communication with parents and guardians
- Provide immediate lifeguard and/or instructor coverage for unexpected demands
- Fill-in as a substitute instructor or lifeguard as required
Personnel:
- Assist with maintaining staff records
- Assist with weekly payroll
- Assist with updating and maintaining iWork
- Promote, conduct, and attend education and/or training sessions
- Assist with the development of fellow employees through conducting in-services and sharing information
- Lead staff through the practice of emergency procedures on an on-going basis
- Assist the Aquatics Coordinators with staff recruitment, orientation, and training
- Assist the Aquatics Coordinators with supervising and evaluating staff
- Execute disciplinary action as required, including both verbal and written warnings
- Ensure the safety and comfort of CGC patrons
- Recognize and prevent hazardous situations
- Present positive public image through quality of work, appearance, and good public relations
- Assist in reviewing and upgrading emergency procedures on a regular basis
- Execute Emergency and Standard First Aid procedures as required, complete forms for ambulance personnel, and Aquatic Centre records
- Take charge of emergency situations in absence of Aquatics Coordinator/Manager
- Maintain contact with public so as to be readily available to respond to questions or concerns
- Handle customer inquiries with tact and diplomacy
KNOWLEDGE AND EDUCATION:
- Practical work experience in a busy aquatics setting
- Ability to enforce safety procedures with tact and firmness
- Ability to respond quickly and accurately while remaining calm in emergency situations, i.e., strong problem-solving skills
- Leadership skills that instill confidence and trust in fellow employees as well as the public
- Ability to stand for long periods of time and exert physical effort
- Ability to work in a noisy and busy environment
- Excellent customer service and public relations skills to communicate effectively with all patrons and fellow staff
- Ability to work with diverse groups through a variety of situations
- Capable of using independent judgment when needed, as well as a professional demeanour under pressure
QUALIFICATIONS:
Mandatory, i.e., to be maintained as a condition of employment:
- National Lifeguard Service (NLS) (pool option)
- Standard First Aid (SFA)
- Oxygen Administration
- CPR-C and AED
- Water Safety Instructor (WSI)/SFL Instructor, or YMCA Instructor
- Lifesaving Society Aquatic Supervisory training
- Minimum 2 to 3 years’ experience as a lifeguard and instructor
Desirable:
- Lifesaving Instructor (LSI) (with Bronze Examiners)
- Lifesaving/ Swim for Life Instructor Trainer
- Lifesaving NLS Instructor and Examiner
- Aquatic Fitness Instructor
- Pool Operator
- 1 to 2 years’ experience in a supervisory role
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Attendance at in-services is mandatory
- Available to work flexible hours, i.e., early morning, day, evening, and weekend, including overtime and potential on call – a regular work week is 35 hours per week
- Working environment includes physical, emotional, and mental demands on infrequent occasion
- Safe lifting, carrying, and rescue techniques, i.e., use of a rescue aid in the water and coordination of rescue with a second rescuer, when possible, are required by the employer
- Safe use of all protective/barrier equipment is required by the employer
- Exposure to loud noises and ability to concentrate in a busy environment

SALARY RANGE:
$29,000 – $36,000 commensurate with qualifications and experience
