Position Summary
Reporting to the Aquatics Coordinator, Programs under the direction of the Manager, Recreation & Program Services, this role involves ensuring quality delivery of the Lifesaving Society’s Swim for Life and Canadian Swim Patrol Programs.
The Aquatics Program Specialist (“APS”) involves ensuring quality programming and water safety, mentoring and coaching Assistant Instructions and Swim Instructors, answering public inquiries, and maintaining a clean aquatic environment. This position also requires the ability to work well in a team setting, ready and willing to assist with miscellaneous duties, be adaptable and a role model to all.
Responsibilities
- Provide in-water mentoring and coaching to instructors to improve their skills as Swim for Life and Canadian Swim Patrol Instructors.
- Review report cards and provide advice to instructors; oversee worksheets being completely in a timely and appropriate manner.
- Assist Swim Instructors with lesson planning.
- Assist Lesson Supervisor with evaluating instructors regularly and providing constructive feedback.
- Instruct programming according to The Lifesaving Society’s Program Guide and course materials, and Canada Games Centre’s Policy and Procedure Manual.
- Maintain a high level of customer engagement by appropriately handling or referring programs and services.
- Attend and actively engage in ongoing training and professional development opportunities.
- Perform, in a cooperative manner, other duties associated to the safe and effective operation of the Canada Games Centre as determined necessary by supervisory team members.
- Complete additional projects as assigned
Qualifications
Mandatory Qualifications: To be maintained as a condition of employment
- Instructional Awards: (current)
- Lifesaving Instructor (LSI)
- Swim for Life Instructor (SFLI)
- National Lifeguard Award (NL) – Pool Option (current)
- Intermediate Workplace First Aid, CPR-C & Airway Management (current)
Desirable Qualifications:
- Examiner (Bronze Medals)
- Canada Games Centre Aquatics Team Lead
- Health Care Provider (HCP)
- Lifesaving Society Aquatic Supervisory TrainingMust maintain active certifications as a condition of employment
Work Schedule
- Starting January 4, 2025. Available shifts are Tuesdays 4-7pm: Thursdays 4-7pm; Saturdays 8am-1pm
- Mandatory in-service attendance and completion of monthly in-servicing requirements and professional development
- Vacation day requests are not realistic during swim lesson sessions and will not be granted
Compensation
- $18.00 per hour (plus 4% vacation pay)
