Making Waves at Spring Swim Meets

CGC Swim Academy and Masters Swim Team Highlights

May 16, 2019

The CGC Swim Academy has kept their momentum going strong through the spring with personal bests and podium finishes being achieved at Age Group Development and Nova Tech Explosion Meets.

CGCSA swimmers Taylor Hollett (13) and Senali Jayawarna (11) competed in the Age Group Development meet held at Acadia Athletic Complex in Wolfville on May 4th and 5th. This was Taylor’s first Age Group meet, and he set personal bests in 4 out of 5 of his events, including an impressive time of 1:14.91 in the 100m Freestyle. Senali also achieved personal bests in 4 out of 5 of her events; she raced a fast 200m Medley, taking just over 10 seconds off her previous time for a personal best of 3:29.09. The Medley is a combination of 4 different swimming styles – butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke and freestyle. Taylor and Senali are both year-round CGCSA members. On May 11th and 12th, the Nova Tech Explosion was held at the Rath Eastlink Community Centre in Truro.  The Nova Tech Explosion meet is an end-of-season competition for year-round swimmers who don’t have age group times; competitors swim all events run at the Nova Tech level over two days which allows swimmers to experience a two-day meet to prepare for age group. CGCSA had 22 swimmers in this event who all performed admirably. Many had significant improvements, with multiple swimmers achieving at least one of the times required for eligibility to age group meets:

  • Gavin Valent earned a bronze medal for completing the Participation Level requirements
  • Ellie Valent earned silver for completing the Level 1 requirements
  • Freya Neilson, Mario Rao and Aiden Roney all earned bronze
  • Heidi Sutherland earned silver

To add to the excitement, two-time Olympic swimmer and bronze medalist for the 2016 Rio Olympic Games, Brittany MacLean was on hand Sunday morning for autographs and photos. Swimmers had the opportunity to ask Brittany questions and get a look at her Olympic and World Championship medals.
