May 29, 2023
EMO Evacuation Shelter Open
As of 11pm on Sunday, May 28th, 2023 the CGC became an evacuation shelter operated by the Canadian Red Cross for those impacted by the fires in Tantallon and area. The CGC will remain closed for regular activities until further notice.
- An evacuation shelter is a location where evacuees are received, documented, personal needs identified and overnight shelter provided.
- The Disaster Animal Response Team of Nova Scotia is onsite at the CGC accepting pets as part of the evacuation shelter.
- Regular CGC activities and amenities are unavailable while the facility is operating as an evacuation shelter. For programs and rentals affected by the closure, registrants will be contacted directly.
- For questions regarding the evacuation shelter, please call 311.
Donations & Volunteering
We understand if you want to help in some way! Currently, the Canadian Red Cross is not accepting donations or volunteers to its shelter site at the CGC. When ready and as needed, the Canadian Red Cross will put a call out through the media regarding how you can help. Your patience during this fluid situation is very much appreciated.
An evacuation shelter is different from a comfort centre.
- Comfort centres are temporary daytime accommodations where food and water are provided, as well as a place to charge devices and receive up-to-date information, when residents are impacted by prolonged power outages, extreme temperatures or other significant events.
- To help the Canadian Red Cross keep track of evacuees at the CGC, please note the CGC is not a comfort centre.
Updates will continue to be posted on our website and social media as they become available. Thank you for your understanding!
