Swim Whisperers

New program coming this fall

June 19, 2015

Great things are happening at the CGC!

Swim Whisperers is a new program we are scheduled to pilot in September. Developed by Angelfish Therapy, Swim Whisperers will provide swim lessons for those with autism, physical difficulties and sensory challenges. On June 10, 2015, we held a special training session for our Swim Whisperers instructors. With the help of volunteer participants from the community, our instructors were able to practice proven strategies to address each participant’s sensory obstacles. This type of specialized and individualized lesson enables a higher rate of success compared to traditional swim lessons. The level of excitement from the training session was mutual between the instructors and participants as they look forward to the fall.

The Swim Whisperers training program allows us to mentor and train staff and expand our programs to be more inclusive.

“I am inspired and motivated to help bring down barriers to allow participants to learn how to swim and prevent drowning.  The Swim Whisperers training program allows us to mentor and train staff and expand our programs to be more inclusive.  This venture, though we have a long way yet to go, thus far has been educational, innovative and rewarding. I am excited to watch the participants and staff learn, grow, and build confidence and independence together.  Through our partnerships with the IWK, Autism NS, Lifesaving Society Nova Scotia and numerous Recreational Therapists, as well as participants, we are gaining a full scope of feedback and information to launch a successful pilot in the fall”.  – Janet Parry, CGC Aquatics Program Coordinator

We can’t wait for this program to launch! Look for it in our Fall Program Guide coming soon.
